Hui Gardens Team

  • The purpose of our committee is to explore the feasibility that a garden can be created in which one neighbor provides the land and several neighbors share the responsibility of building, tending and all receive the bounty. We would begin by sharing with each other our strengths and outline elements for success. Once we have the first garden planted and the model underway, we would bring back our learnings to the group and inspire others to try it. The committee would also share their growing ideas and practices with the larger core group and the larger community and gain insights from the backyard garden committees and the community garden committees as well.

1. Teaches gardening skills
2. Promotes love of good, healthy food
3. Teaches about sustainable living on our island and old Hawaiian practices
4. Is an inspiration for language arts and art projects
5. Is great physical exercise

Our team helps schools and students fund, design, build, and maintain edible school gardens. We work together to encourage schools to start gardens, to help obtain tools to use in the garden, to create fences, raised beds, and nutrient-rich soil. We research other successful school gardens to learn from them and help teachers to create age-appropriate lesson plans. Best of all we get to experience the joy of spending precious time with our keiki in the garden learning together about growing healthy, delicious food.

Our pre-assembled gardens in a box (Gardens-to-go) project on oahu was built with the ideas of your Home Garden Project on Maui. We would like to find a way to support your project with our garden boxes, since they could be placed where there is no space for gardens in small yards, condo, etc. Perhaps one of your committee would contact us to see how we may be of support to your program . aloha, Jay Ogden
