Japanese Government to Build Smart Grid on Maui

Hawaii and Japan signed off on a project Tuesday to build a smart grid on Maui to demonstrate how solar, wind and other renewable energy sources can be integrated into an electrical grid.

First All Electric Rental Cars Come To Maui

 The Maui-based Bio-Beetle ECO Car Rental company located in Kahului has expanded its business to include all-electric vehicles.

Bio-Beetle is adding the 2011 Nissan Leaf to its rental fleet, which already contains the Toyota Prius hybrid, the biodiesel Volkswagen Beetles and Jettas, and the biodiesel Jeep Liberty. The 2011 Nissan Leaf is a 100% electric, plug-in vehicle.

GMO Grass for New Biofuel

University of California Berkely biologist George S. Chuck has transferred a gene from a variety of corn into a fast growing species of switchgrass that increases the amount of ethenol-producing starch in  grass up to 225 percent and prevents the grass from flowering and spreading its pollen. Because the grass doesn’t pollenate, it has almost no hard to process lignin, and needs no heavy chemical treatment when producing ethanol.
