October 2010 School Garden Work and Learn Day

Saturday, October 16
8:00 – 11:00 A.M.
Kihei Elementary School
This will be a big event as we prepare for the planting days to start the end of October. More people make it faster AND more FUN. We’ll have all types of tasks from applying amendments to labeling beds for planting.

Bring your gardening questions and we’ll try to help. Please dress in comfortable gardening clothes and closed-toed shoes, a hat and apply plenty of sunscreen! We’ll provide some snacks and water. Please bring your own cup or bottle.

We are also looking for
Garden Teaching Assistants who can help out during school hours. Typically hours are just 11 A.M – 2 P.M. but may be longer on planting days. No gardening experience is needed. We’ll orient you and it really helps the teachers when there are extra adults in the garden. This is always one of the most rewarding volunteer things you can do! Call Kathy at 344-0469 or email kathy at southmauisustainability dot org to sign-up or get more information.

New volunteers from the community are always encouraged to come join us so even if you can’t make this event, let us know you are interested and we’ll add you to our school garden mailing list!

Youth Gardening Workshop

Today we are representing Kihei Elementary at the Youth Gardening Workshop presented by CTAHR.  In preparing, I consolidated a few of resources that may come in handy for others starting a school garden.

  • SMS_School_Garden_Final_Report (required for grant).  It is a great summary of the year with costs, volunteer hours, teacher evaluations, etc.
  • Wiki Gardens We found these to be the easiest to use and best “producers”.  They are tube with irrigation, great organic potting mix.  Students can get very close to both sides of the row.
  • Grower’s Secret – When we thought our tomatoes would never start growing, this natural plant stimulant (produced on Maui) was amazing.
  • Our Flickr Page with slideshow presented at the workshop.  Flickr is wonderful for collecting and organizing tons of photos!
  • Some tricks, tips and recipes in an organic garden (tried and tested at the school)

Kihei Elementary School Garden Starts Its Second Year!

Last year, SMS designed and installed a 10,000 square foot garden at Kihei Elementary School. Maui County provided grant funding, many Maui vendors donated garden tools and materials, and over 60 community volunteers helped install the garden beds. The garden produced beyond everyone’s expectations with 540 students in 27 classes planting, maintaining, and harvesting the produce. The garden has been featured on local, state, and national news including two mentions in Huffington Post [1] [2] .

School is back in session and students and teachers are able to use the garden for a second year. The garden grows and so does our need for volunteers! We are recruiting more volunteers to help in the garden during the school day. Community volunteers assist teachers with managing classes while in the garden, showing students how to prune herbs or look for bugs, or helping them with their assigned tasks. Just a few hours each month is all that we ask, and you need not have garden expertise to help, as we have experienced gardeners there as well. If you are interested in becoming a member of our community volunteer “Garden Corps,” please contact Kathy at (808) 344-0469.

Kihei School Garden Work and Learn Day

Saturday, July 24
8:00 – 10:00 A.M.
Kihei Elementary School

Last month we had about 10 people join us for our first “Work and Learn” day to build compost bins and clean up the garden. We had some great questions from gardeners and teachers alike. See the Garden Tips article on composting to see the bins that were built.

We’ll be continuing our garden cleanup. We are working with the school to address irrigation issues but until they get fixed we have weeds! Bring your gardening questions and we’ll try to help. Please dress in comfortable gardening clothes and closed-toed shoes, a hat and apply plenty of sunscreen! We’ll provide some snacks and water. Please bring your own cup or bottle.

We ask that you let us know if you can make it so we know how many to plan for. New volunteers from the community are always encouraged to come join us so even if you can’t make this event, let us know you are interested. Call Nio at (808)280.5308 or email nio at southmauisustainability dot org.

Kihei School Garden Work and Learn Day

Saturday, June 12
8:00 – 10:00 A.M.
Kihei Elementary School

Please join us at the garden for a morning of spring garden tasks and ‘summerizing’ the garden for the summer school break. Enjoy tending vegetables, pulling out spent crops, weeding, mulching, and helping us build two compost bins if you’re so inclined! Your Kokua helps us keep the garden maintained through the summer school break. Please dress in comfortable gardening clothes and closed-toed shoes, a hat and apply plenty of sunscreen! We’ll provide some snacks and water. Please bring your own cup or bottle.

We ask that you let us know if you can make it so we know how many to plan for. To RSVP or if you’d like to sign up to be a team leader for one of the maintenance areas or for building the compost bins, call Nio at (808)280.5308 or email Nio at SouthMauiSustainability dot org.

Regular Garden Event:
Our monthly workdays are usually held on the 2nd Saturday of every month from 8 to 11 am (unless otherwise noted.) These work and learn days allow South Maui Sustainability to keep our school gardens in good shape and provide opportunities for larger scale projects to be accomplished. We also love how much learning goes on as we share with each other in the garden. New volunteers from the community are always encourage to come join us!

Harvest Day Party

You may have caught a similar clip on the KGMB9 Evening News! Here is an excerpt from blog written by Peter Liu that features the kids and the SMS volunteers!

Earlier this week, South Maui Sustainability held a Harvest Day Party at their Kihei Elementary School Garden. Volunteers Chef Nio Kindla, Kathy Becklin, Susan Wyche and Stuart Karlan led Ms. Manglicmot’s 19 eager kindergarten students around the garden and showed them how to harvest their own vegetables.
